The technology consists of a new optical sensing method to measure sedimentation velocities.
Sedimentation is the way suspended particles in a fluid settle into layers under the influence of gravity. The sedimentation velocity depends on various factors such as particle density, fluid density, fluid viscosity, particle size, particle shape. Measuring this velocity provides access to particle and fluid properties. With enough precision, it enables characterization of products, physical phenomena, pathologies, in order to optimize chemical and biological processes.
In the agri-food sector, this method finds its perfect application, especially in the dairy industry. It can be used to characterize and/or optimize phase transition processes, emulsification, flocculation, creaming, separation of object populations, and more.
To perform this measurement, the innovative technology relies on the interactions between light and matter in micro-resonant rings. The spectrum of light transmitted through the micro-resonators provides a dynamic signature of sedimentation or phase transition processes in the sample. The method is applicable for concentrations ranging from 0.1 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL for droplets (50 µL) or micro-pools (200 µL), unlike existing methods that require a significantly larger sample volume. The measurement of condensation and dew point is also possible. The microfabrication process is based on low-cost polymer technologies, which is another advantage of the technology.
